Recent images from NASA’s Mars rover, aptly named ‘Curiosity’ show what appears to be a rodent living on the planet.

In a post from UFO Sightings Daily, writer Scott C Waring described the creature he spotted in one of the photographs,

“Note its lighter color upper and lower eyelids, its nose and cheek areas, its ear, its front leg and stomach. Looks similar to a squirrel camouflaged in the stones and sand by its colors,” he wrote. “Hey, who doesn’t love squirrels, right?”

Unfortunately, further investigation discovered that the rodent turned out to just be a rock that looks like a rat. How disappointing…no need for pest control there then!

This isn’t the first time a NASA rover has picked up what was thought to be some kind of life form. In 1976, ‘Viking 1’ picked up images of what looked like a human head. Information from NASA stated,

”huge rock formation … which resembles a human head … formed by shadows giving the illusion of eyes, nose and mouth.”

The “face” caused massive publicity and it wasn’t until 2001 that a final image was captured that confirmed it was nothing more than a rock formation.

Although ‘Curiosity’ has been roaming Mars for nearly a year, no life forms have been discovered (not even a rat, apparently).

If you have discovered a rat in your home (and it’s definitely not just a rock!) then contact us today. We offer pest control in London and across Kent, specialising in mice and rat removal services for both residential and commercial properties.

Just weeks after their move, the BBC’s new headquarters in Central London have become infested with mice.

According to an article in the Evening Standard, BBC employees have been told to inform the facilities team as soon as they spot a mouse. Traps and bait have been laid around the building in Portland Place in the hope that it will control the problem, and staff have been told not to leave any food on their desks. Surely hiring a pest control company would be much more effective?

BBC Management have blamed cable ducting for the infestation as the mice would have been able to squeeze through small gaps in the walls. According to the Evening Standard, “BBC journalists have been tweeting about mouse sightings and one rodent in the newsroom was named Entwistle after the former director-general.”

If you’re suffering with a mouse infestation and require mice removal in London or Kent, contact us today on 0800 311 8767.

Environmental Health officers were called to the Tesco Supermarket in Hertford following reports of a rat infestation last week.

It is unknown how many rats were found on the premises but it was enough to warrant a full investigation from Environmental Health. A spokeswoman from East Herts Council; who also attended the scene, confirmed that the incident had been investigated and the supermarket would be monitored moving forward to ensure that proper pest control measures are being enforced.

A representative from Tesco stated, “As soon as we noticed an issue, we took swift and effective action to deal with the problem. We have been working closely with our pest control contractor and the local environmental health department, who are satisfied with the steps we have taken.

“We would like to reassure our customers that this was in no way a risk to food safety and are sorry to our customers for any inconvenience caused.”

If you run a food business then commercial pest control contracts are always advisable. Regular checks and maintenance of pest control measures can prevent a problem before it arises.

If you need commercial or residential pest control in Dartford, or anywhere else in Kent, contact A-Team Pest Control today. Our offices are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

SenesTech, a research company based in Arizona has come up with a plan to administer birth-control drugs to rats in four subway stations across New York City. Funded by a $1.1million grant from the National Institutes of Health, representatives of SenesTech will put the drug inside food and drink scraps in a number of subway rubbish rooms.

“The biggest trick for us is to produce something that is orally active and makes it possible to deliver the drug,” states Dr Loretta Mayer of SenesTech.

Previous tests have been carried out across the city to find out what New York rats like to eat and drink;

“They like lattes, they like Chinese food…People have been making jokes about whether to use pepperoni oil. That is not actually out of the question.”

After previous attempts at pest control using poisoned bait failed, the city decided to embark upon the birth-control plan instead. As female rats can produce a litter of around 12 from as young as 8 weeks old, it is hoped that this plan will help to significantly reduce the number of wild rats in the city.

A horticultural official from the Tirunelveli district in India has developed a device that uses light to trap pests.

The ‘Solar Pest Trap’, as the device has been aptly named; was designed as a simple and cost-effective way to reduce the persistent pest attacks faced by local farmers. Despite spraying pesticides on their crops at least once a week, farmers faced a constant battle with flies ravaging the crops.

Mr. Ramesh, a local farmer, has installed three light traps at his two-acre farm with very positive results; “Many pests are caught and changing the position of lights once in a while is even more effective. I used to apply organic pesticides in the farm but I felt no need to spray them after the traps were installed.”

The Solar Pest Trap is also useful as a residential pest control measure, providing a viable solution for mosquito and moth problems.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), approximately 10,000 children a year are accidentally exposed to commercially available at-home pest control measures, including rat poisons.

Phil Pierce, Technical Services Manager at Western Pest Services, New Jersey recently stated,

“Our field team witnessed a home where mouse traps covered the kitchen floor…In that same home, a four-year-old was running around and risked getting a finger caught in one of the traps, which could easily break a bone. Too often, homeowners will set off a fogger in the attic, and, meanwhile, be sleeping in the bedroom downstairs, which is a clear indication that they are not following the directions in the fogger manual. When you are dealing with chemicals, you have to treat them that way.”

Over-reaction to a pest control issue can often cause more harm than good, and can become a health hazard for both humans and pets;

“I have walked into the homes of pet owners where rodent baits are set up out in the open,” says Pierce. “Dogs and cats can easily ingest certain types of baits that contain pest control materials and get very sick.”

In January, the EPA announced its intent to prohibit the use of rodent control products in the US with a view to reduce the potential risks to children and pets when misused by people who are untrained.
